BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — You’ve probably seen them before. It’s usually a big letter hanging in front of your favorite restaurant.
But do you know what it means? It’s a chance for patrons to see how each dining place scores with the health department, and technology is taking it to the next level.
Before, you’d walk in to your favorite restaurant and see an “A,” “B” or “C” grade in the window. Now, that information is, literally, at your finger tips, as long as you have a smartphone and an app.
Kern County Environmental Health Services Department issues grades for all restaurants in town. It gives restaurant goers the chance to see if a restaurant has any violations that might make them think twice about eating at an establishment. With the simple scan of your smart phone, you can see each restaurants entire inspection report.
“All you have to do is hold up the ‘scan me’ symbol on grade card, and it will take you to the website, where we post all the most recent inspection scores. There you can read their most recent inspection, history and if they had any violation and what they were,” says Donna Fenton, the chief of the environmental health department.
It’s something that’s grabbing store owners attention in a good way. El Camino Real assistant manager Magdalena Camps says it’s something her restaurant takes pride in.
“It’s a good feeling, because getting a good grade isn’t easy. Now people can understand what goes into getting it. There’s so many restaurants out there, so having an ‘A’ restaurant is good for us and something to be proud of,” says Campa.
As of April, Kern County’s health department was the first and only county in California to use this scanning technology. They hope to upgrade their system for fast and easier scanning in the near future.
